HISTORY - The `Monastery'
1- Kilrush Bathing Hotel
In 1840 James Paterson, a Scotsman `engaged in the erection of hot baths and an extensive hotel near the Creek'. It was known as The Bathing Hotel.
“This establishment most worthy of notice is the Kilrush Bathing Hotel, which for situation, elegance and accommodation may vie with any in this or in the sister Kingdom” - 1842 Business Directory.
2-Parish Priest's Residence
It then became the private residence of the Parish Priest, Very Rev. Dr. Timothy Kelly, P.P., V.G., who came to Kilrush in 1848. When he died on 16th March, 1869, he left it in his will for the purpose of establishing a monastery for the Christian Brothers.
3-St. Timothy's Orphanage
The Sisters of Mercy came to Kilrush on 1st May, 1855 and occupied two houses in Frances Street until they moved to the new Convent on 30th March, 1864. Following the death of the Parish Priest, they had the building rent-free until the Christian Brothers came. St. Timothy's Orphanage was opened on 31st October, 1870 and within a year fourteen girl orphans were being cared for there. In 1874 they moved to a new location until the new Orphanage was opened at the Convent of Mercy in 1882.
4-Christian Brothers Monastery
In 1802 Edmund Ignatius Rice founded the Christian Brothers, in Waterford. The Motto is `Facere et Docere' - “to do and teach”.
The Christian Brothers opened the house as their Monastery, on 11th May, 1874 and remained there for 101 years until 20th March, 1975.
5-Irish Marine Products
Irish Marine Products Ltd, Seaweed Processors, purchased the property from the Christian Brothers at Public Auction on 1st February, 1978. The 160 year-old `Monastery' was unoccupied for 20 years, 1975-1995.
6-Charles and Edel Glynn
The `Monastery' was acquired on 16th January, 1995 by Charles and Edel Glynn who fully restored their 4-storey home; occupying it on 27th October, 1995 with their children, Charlie, Suzie, Sally and Georgie. They won a prize in the A.I.B. Environmental Awards 1996.
Charles, Computer Consultant and Kingswood Computing Agent, runs a Computing Training Centre and, Internet Bureau there.
